Outstanding leadership begins with you. Everyone on the veterinary healthcare team is a leader who makes an impact in the workplace. What kind of an impact are you making? According to leadership experts James Kouzes and Barry Posner, authors of the Leadership Challenge, leadership is a set of skills that can be learned and improved. The primary instrument for leadership is the self. Mastery of the art of leadership comes from mastering the self and leadership is self-development. One of the most valuable frameworks to improve leadership is through the domains of emotional intelligence identified by Daniel Goleman, and Richard Boyatzis: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Within these four domains are 12 specific leadership competencies or skills that can learned to become an exceptional veterinary healthcare team member and leader.
