NEW YORK, September 13, 2022 – Did you know that less than 6% of dogs and cats that experience cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) survive to hospital discharge? While knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in humans may be common practice, similar training and standardized guidelines did not exist in veterinary medicine until recently. This fall, the US Vet Shows team has partnered with the Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Society (VECCS) to bring their lifesaving Reassessment Campaign on Veterinary Resuscitation (RECOVER) initiative to the New York Vet Show. VECCS will be hosting two RECOVER CPR BLS and ALS Rescuer Certification sessions, with one on Thursday, November 3, and one on Friday, November 4, as well as four emergency and critical care content sessions on Friday, November 4, at the New York Vet Show at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

RECOVER is a collaborative project supported by VECCS and the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC), involving over 100 board-certified veterinary specialists from around the world who have spent months addressing this critical problem. The hope for this initiative is that the body of research and work will serve as a foundation for the development of training tools not only for members of the veterinary industry but for pet owners as well.

Ken Yagi, MS, RVT, VTA (ECC) VTS (SAIM) and Chief Veterinary Nursing Officer for Veterinary Emergency Group and the Program Director for the RECOVER Initiative, will be the lead speaker for the sessions. He is well-versed in topics related to ECC, transfusion medicine and the veterinary nursing profession and invites everyone to ask “why” to understand the “what” and “how” of the veterinary field. RECOVER CPR BLS and ALS Rescuer Certification

• Date: Thursday, November 3 and Friday, November 4
• Time: 8:00AM – 3:00PM (1 hour lunch break at 12:00PM)
• Job titles this is open to: Veterinarians, Owner/Veterinarians, Veterinary Technicians and Students
• Prerequisite: Participants must have a valid online BLS and ALS course completion certificate to attend this workshop
• Capacity per session: 20 each day
• Session Price: $300
• Course Description:
  • Course Objective One: Rapidly recognize patients with cardiopulmonary arrest, properly administer high-quality chest compressions using the most up-to-date approaches in dogs and cats, provide mouth-to-snout or intubated ventilation according to current evidence-based guidelines, utilize effective communication and team skills that will improve your ability to manage emergent and critically ill patients, choose the most useful monitoring devices for patients in cardiopulmonary arrest and interpret data from them, and rapidly diagnose the arrest ECG rhythm to determine the best ALS therapies for the patient.
  • Course Objective Two: Administer the most effective drugs and other adjunctive therapies for patients with cardiopulmonary arrest.
  • Course Objective Three: Perform life-saving procedures such as venous cutdowns, intraosseous catheter placement and open chest CPR.

VECCS will also be hosting four emergency and critical care content sessions throughout the day on Friday, November 4, at the New York Vet Show. Details and information on these sessions include:

• Moving Pets with Respiratory Distress: Tricks for Stabilization and Safe Transport (11:00 AM)
  Speaker: Gareth Buckley – Chief Medical Officer, UF Veterinary Hospitals
  This course will cover how to prepare a dyspneic patient for transport. We will discuss how to quickly identify the source of the respiratory distress, techniques for emergency stabilization or respiratory distress and options for oxygen supplementation during transport.
   
• Fluid Therapy in Cardiopulmonary Disease (1:00 PM)
  Speaker: Gareth Buckley – Chief Medical Officer, UF Veterinary Hospitals
  This course will cover how to approach fluid therapy in a patient with pre-existing cardiopulmonary disease. We will discuss how to safely do fluid therapy in patients with common heart and lung diseases, and how to mitigate the risks associated with fluid therapy in those patients.
   
• Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome (2:00 PM)
  Speaker: Anusha Balakrishnan – Director of Emergency Certificate Education at the Veterinary Emergency Group
  This lecture will cover the etiology and clinical presentation of acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome (formerly referred to as hemorrhagic gastroenteritis- HGE) in dogs. It will focus on the diagnostic workup plan and subsequently delve into management of these patients with an emphasis on resuscitation and fluid therapy, rational antimicrobial usage, and supportive care.
   
• Feline - Is it heart or is it lung? (4:00 PM)
  Speaker: Anusha Balakrishnan – Director of Emergency Certificate Education at the Veterinary Emergency Group
  This lecture will cover the typical clinical presentation of a cat in respiratory distress with a focus on emergency stabilization as well as point of care diagnostics that can be performed safely in these fragile patients. Imaging findings, with a focus on point of care ultrasound in helping distinguish these patients is discussed, along with patient management
