Nursing the Oncology Patient

03 Nov 2022
Vet Tech and Nursing Theater 1

The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the importance of veterinary nurses, and the support we provide as one side of the team to our patients and their families. I intend to discuss everything from the time of diagnosis, the goals of the owner, proposed treatment options, and much more.
From obtaining diagnostic samples to further characterizing the disease process, I will touch on staging and proper sample handling. After diagnosis, the next step is to discuss the options and how best to approach that based on each client's needs.
Chemotherapy is known to cause many side effects, and I will discuss how best we can support these patients during that time. It is also my intention to discuss some common myths and misconceptions surrounding chemotherapy treatment in companion animals.
At the conclusion of this presentation, you should have a better understanding of what goes into supporting and nursing the oncology patient.
