Lions, elephants, gorillas, turtles and tarantulas; in zoo medicine we really see it all! There is a lot to take into account when deciding how to treat wild animals. Some animals can be trained through positive reinforcement to participate in their own health care. Other animals require immobilization and intensive hands on therapy. Zoo medicine is a critical thinkers dream; coming up with unique ways to treat common health problems. Whether it’s a gorilla with a broken leg or a rodent with an ear infection, we must rely on ingenuity and innovation to care for some of the rarest animals in the world.
In this lecture we will discuss several zoo cases and unique treatment approaches.
